A virtual crime of passion.

The Ex Files

Divorce often brings out some heavy emotions - all that anger, sorrow, and rage. We sometimes think dark, dark thoughts and act out in surprisingly aggressive ways. When I first realized what was going on with my EX, I immediately hid his phone book. Childish, yes, but effective. I mean, why make things easy for him? When he asked me where it was, I played dumb and said, "I thought you already took it." The funny thing was, I hid it so well, I couldn't even find it until I moved. Then I just tossed it.

The point is, we all try to find ways to help us cope with the grief. Some of us, like me go into therapy or blog. Others plot to kill, like an amazing story I read today about a woman in Japan. It's actually quite a funny story. Except that she might be in jail for five years for living out her fantasy of revenge...

This is a case of the real world colliding with a virtual world. Here are the facts. A 43-year-old Japanese piano teacher's real world was upended when her hubby divorced her without a word of warning. And boy was she pissed. He was an avid player of an online virtual world game called "Maple Story" where he created an avatar, or digital image that represented himself, and he engaged in virtual relationships, social activities and battling monsters. Real mature stuff.

To exact her revenge, the woman used the login information she got from her husband when they were getting along, and she went online, in cold-blood, and with premeditation, busted a cap in his avatar's sorry ass. The man freaked out when he logged on to slay some monsters or some crap and discovered his beloved avatar was now sleeping with the fishes. So he did what every mature man does when he discovers his online alter ego has been murdered, he called the cops.
