Last nail in the coffin
The Ex Files
It was bad enough that my husband wanted out of our marriage. What was horrific was that it happened about 5 months after we started our remodel. The remodel was my husband’s idea.
It was supposed to be for our retirement. I really threw myself into it, wanting to make it as nice as I could for the three of us. I put in all wood windows that brought in the view and brightened the place. I got stain-grade wood, too, because our house had a Craftsman feel about it.
I also created two beautiful bathrooms with Walker Zanger tile and granite and honed travertine. I also knew that there was red oak flooring under the carpeting, so before I sold it, I pulled up the carpet and refinished the floors until they gleamed. I spent a year and half working on it, and it was beautiful place when I left.
It was everything I could have wanted. You should have seen the deck. This gorgeous slate flooring with a wood and wrought iron railing that looked out on the local mountain range. And God, I hated to go…but I had no choice. I had to sell it so my EX could get his half out of it. I couldn’t afford to buy him out.
Well, I heard today from a neighbor that the people who’ve bought it, have pretty much trashed it. They took out the beautiful hardwood floors and put in marble floors. In a 50’s postwar house, mind you. Marble. Now they’re getting estimates from a vinyl window company to replace all the wonderful wood windows.
Instead of selling it, I should have just set a match to it. I thought I had left something lovely and improved the neighborhood. Now, it’s all being torn apart. I even got a warning from the city (who thought I still lived there) because the new owners tore up the landscaping in the front and left it decimated.
