What I've Learned -- The Year In Review
Justice & Truth Reigns
It’s been quite a year. My father became sick, my mother died, we got a dog, my son turned 13, and I finished college. I’ve learned a lot living through all of those crazy milestones that took place during one, single calendar year. What have I learned from all of this?
First, if someone you love is ill, make sure you take the time to say everything you ever wanted to say to them. If you do that, you’ll STILL forget important things, but at least you know you made the effort. A couple days ago, I came across a stuffed bunny my mom had made for me when I was little, and I felt upset that I didn’t thank her for it again.
Second, enjoy your pets! What other living thing is always happy to see you? Morning after morning, my dog wags her tail ferociously, absolutely thrilled to see me. It makes me overlook the fact she likes to chew on her bed occasionally.
Third, enjoy your children! They grow up far too quickly. I remember holding my son in my lap as a baby, watching him smile for the first time. Yesterday, he picked ME up (as a joke)! I take the time out to enjoy his sense of humor, and even listen to the merits of playing HALO for the X-Box 360.
Fourth, do not give up on your dreams. It may take you longer to get there than you had hoped, but don’t quit. I never thought I’d be able to finish my college degree before I was 60, but I’ll be donning a cap and gown in May!
Lastly, all of the changes and challenges that happen in life seem less traumatic and scary when you have a supportive partner or friend at your side. That’s the final lesson I’ve learned.
