Who Says There Ain't No Cure For The Summertime Blues?

Justice & Truth Reigns

Ahhhhh... summer’s just about here in the northeast. School’s out and the temperature is climbing. It makes me think back to summers-gone-by with the ex-husband. Shockingly, the man actually did occasionally go on vacations with me and our son. However, he made it clear that he hated the outdoors, and hated the beach even more. “The sun makes me sick,” he’d whine.

Even though he hated the beach, we ended up vacationing a few times on Cape Cod. We even spent a couple of days with my parents while they were vacationing there. One day, he agreed to sit by the pool! It was actually a hysterical sight.

He was clearly miserable. He had on a huge hat, sunglasses, a massive cold bottle of water, and crouched under the umbrella so not a single shred of sunlight would touch his body. Not only was he miserable, he was bored. He then proceeded to open, “the bag.”

Apparently, our son and my family and I were not entertaining enough. From his bag, he pulled out his laptop with a wireless connection (this was about seven years ago before wireless laptops were the norm), his cell phone, and his GPS. He proceeded to surf the ‘net and speak very loudly on his cell phone to his friend, J, giving him directions to our vacation spot, all but begging him to come.

At one point, I thought he was actually going to cry when J said he couldn’t make it up there that day. That’s pretty much how the afternoon went. Actually, that’s pretty much how the next few DAYS went. Now, it takes A LOT to insult my parents, and even they were annoyed that he couldn’t manage to tear himself away from the phone and the computer for a few minutes.

While we packed up to go home, just for the heck of it, I checked his cell phone to see how many minutes he had used talking to J and other assorted friends during the five days we were on vacation. The grand total was 986 minutes. What a great way to spend a family vacation! Actually, he probably only vaguely remembers it because he was ON THE PHONE most of the time. It’s no wonder I divorced that man…..
